check out の意味

この間、たまたま辞書 (確か Longman Activator) で見かけたのですが、こんなふうに書いてありました。

if something that someone has told you checks out,
it is proved to be true when you check it

用例としては次の二つが挙げられていました。

  • Everything she says checks out on our computer files.
  • If his alibi doesn't check out the police are going to charge him with murder.

"check out" というと、ホテルを出るときに使う言葉だと思っていましたが、そのイメージと比べるとちょっと違うように感じられます。
